Senior Credential Program
Phlebotomy Technician jobs are in demand in southwest Ohio and beyond! Be ready to join the growing health care career field by the time you graduate from high school. This program is for high school seniors in Great Oaks-affiliated school districts.
This course combines academic and hands-on classroom instruction. Off-site experiences are offered as they are available. Students will learn to safely collect actual blood samples, clean and sterilize equipment, and use infection control precautions. Successful completion of the course will qualify students to take the national certification exam, Phlebotomy Technician Certification CPT, to become a Phlebotomy Technician. Employment opportunities include hospitals, labs, blood banks, nursing homes, or physician offices.

Education and certifications
You must be a high school senior to take this course. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to take the national Phlebotomy Technician Certification CPT exam.
What you will learn
Understand and define the basics of phlebotomy.
Know and interact within the hospital structure.
Understand and interpret legal issues.
Participate in and incorporate safety awareness and precautions.
Know and practice infection control and prevention procedures.
Use, know, and interpret medical terminology.
Know importance of and classify anatomy and physiology.
Examine the function of the circulatory, lymphatic, and immune systems.
Know, identify, and describe the use of venipuncture equipment.
Perform routine venipuncture.
Identify and perform dermal punctures.
Recognize and perform corrective procedures for venipuncture puncture complications.
Perform correct blood collections from children and elderly.
Perform correct arterial collection.
Know and understand collections of non‑blood samples handling, processing, and transporting the specimen.
Identify and understand special procedures and point‑of‑care testing.
Prerequisites
Must take WorkKeys® tests and score a 4 on Applied Math, Graphic Literacy and Workplace Documents.
Must have transportation.
Must be a high school senior.
