Sean Cohmer

About me:

My first formal education after high school came at the US Army Signal School at Ft. Gordon, Georgia where I graduated as a distinguished honor graduate in my Switching & Routing course. After 8 years in the Army, I left and attended Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona and trained as a practicing biologist and became so interested in biology and medicine that I pursued master's degrees in both Biology and the History and Philosophy of Science, Technology, and Medicine. I have earned degrees in science and in the arts, and I am continuing my education even now. By the end of 2021, I will have completed my master's degree in Education as well, specializing in Curriculum and Teaching.

Before teaching at Live Oaks, I had completed all of the coursework toward my Ph.D. in History & Philosophy of Science but not my dissertation. At some point in the next 5 years or so, I plan to return to the pursuit of my doctorate while teaching.

I have spent more than 10 years in industry, most of which I spent as a network systems engineer and at the White House Communications Agency in Washington, DC as a Presidential Secure Console Controller and Supervisor.

I have more than 13 years teaching experience, 10 at the university level and the other three here at Great Oaks.

What I love about teaching is building a learning community with my students and their parents, and I especially like the idea that what I do has a significant impact on the Lifetime Earning Potential of all of my graduates. Research shows that a good Career Tech Instructor can increase the average Lifetime Earning Potential of their students by as much as $30k per year over their working lives. Knowing this gives me a great deal of satisfaction, that I am helping young people find their calling in a career and to earn a good living from it.

The best part of my classroom is when students experience a revelation... some sudden realization of truth about something they were struggling or frustrated about. I always crack a smile when I see it happen.
